We've written a bit about the experiences steve barker and impressions that we have received here in Namibia, but we must not forget to write about the primary reason that we are here, namely Nancy Barker and her PhD project on competition between lions and hyenas.
She is Canadian and deaf born in a deaf family. She went most of his life in associated schools steve barker and has learned to speak and read lips, which is of great help to her when she chose to take his master's and doctorate in Africa. She earned steve barker her master's degree in Zoology at the University of Pretoria in South Africa.
It's not easy being a deaf, white, foreign woman in South Africa and Namibia. Therefore, she experienced a little of everything, but it has not turned her out, but made her even more stubborn and predetermined steve barker - which is a characteristic that not everyone possesses. It is believed that she is the first deaf zoologist researcher who has done field work and not sticking to labratorier.
She has always been interested in carnivores (flesh-eating) animals and wanted initially to deal with wolves and bears in Canada, but due to too many security measures are and prejudices about deaf, she chose to pack their bags and go up against his biggest childhood dream : Africa.
Along with her we drive around a lot to collect data and observe lions and hyenas. It is not an easy task, because there has not been researched in Etosha's lions at least 20 years, steve barker which is not easy to part political controversies associated with that she is a deaf woman who chooses to research the carnivorous animals in Africa.
Moreover, there is a great interest in providing support or fund a project on carnivore animals in Africa - elephants and rhinos score higher points, even claw / hovbærende herbivores, such as springbok, kudu, oryx and zebras have greater economic value than lions and hyenas because there is money in the sale of game meat (meat). Finally, it is also a costly steve barker affair having to invest in equipment for data acquisition, for example, costs a GPS collar $ 4,000. There are bought 17 collar - 9 to lions and 8 to hyenas, but it is far from enough to achieve a satisfactory result and it is not always that they work - so it is quite demanding work having to track down animals with not-functional steve barker collars, immobilize them with anesthetic darts and switch collars out. To deal with carnivorous animals is not a 9til5 jobs - many carnivore animals are nocturnal (active at night), so you should perform its behavioral observations (which is a big part of Nancy's project) at night; from sunset to -opgang. Luckily she has the passion for the project, which drives steve barker her forward to the results. A passion that we are lucky to get a part.
